From Greece to Charlotte: An Art Lover's Journey

Welcome to my blog! I hope you're having a great summer and staying hydrated amidst the heat waves and record-high temperatures. In my last post, I talked about my recent Greece trip with my mother. Traveling has always been a passion of mine, offering endless opportunities to connect with new people and immerse myself in different cultures. Little did I know, a chance meeting with fellow travelers in Greece would lead to a recent trip to Charlotte's vibrant mural scene.

This unexpected journey started with a chat over jet lag and hotel check-in times and ended with me gaining a new appreciation for the murals brightening Charlotte. What are the odds of meeting travelers in Greece only to realize that they live less than three hours away?

Talk about six degrees of separation! Whoa!! Hold on, you’re telling me that you would’ve never met them if you didn’t go to Greece? Pretty much ... yes!! We formed a connection with people who live nearby, yet we didn't meet them until we traveled. It just goes to show how travel can create unexpected connections. Next time, I might just hang out at the closest Panera Bread and save myself the airfare. LMBO!!

So, let’s get this mural show on the road. Below are some pictures of the murals I visited during my time in Charlotte. They’re not in any particular order — I’m just writing about them as I go through my phone. LOL. Don’t judge me too harshly ... at least I’m honest. HAHA!!

Mural # 1  Back to the Future

"Wait a minute. Wait a minute Doc, are you telling me you built a time machine out of a DeLorean?"

LOL. OH MY. Without dating myself too badly, this trilogy was well ahead of its time in cinematography and action. “Back to the Future” is a classic sci-fi film where teenager Marty McFly travels back in time to 1955 using a DeLorean time machine invented by the eccentric, nutty Doc Brown. Seeing this mural brought all those iconic moments from the movie rushing back.

"Can you say 'Team Oldskool'?"

Location: 301 N. Tryon Street side wall down 7th Street at Discovery Place, Charlotte

Mural # 2   Krispy Kreme Doughnut Wall

There's nothing better than walking around snapping photos on a hot day, especially when you can pair it with some sweets. I mean, who could resist doughnuts — unless you're trying to maintain your summer body. HAHA!! Krispy Kreme has moved its new corporate offices and test kitchen space into a refurbished South End warehouse in Charlotte dating back to the 1900s. That’s pretty dope, right? Hmm, I wonder if they’re hiring. LOL. Don’t mind me, I’m just thinking aloud.

Location: South End, in front of Spaces, 2116 Hawkins St., Charlotte

Mural # 3   Vibrant Steps

Now that we’ve eaten our doughnut or doughnuts (no judgement here, HA!!), let’s turn our attention to these colorful stairs. I truly believe that this piece embodies perspective and the way things are perceived according to where you are standing at a particular time. It’s about finding our way alongside the decisions we make and the choices we encounter on our unique journey. As the saying goes, “Perception is everything.” Now that our philosophy moment has passed … LOL. Enjoy the burst of color and creativity these stairs bring to the Charlotte landscape!

Location: 1100 Metropolitan Ave. Unit 125-E, Charlotte

Mural # 4   Honeycomb Haven

This is one of my personal favorites because it highlights bees and their vital role in our world. Plus, it perfectly ties in with my blog’s name, Biz3b Travels. Pun definitely intended. HEHE!

As artist Matt Willey beautifully puts it, “Bees never forget that they are part of something bigger than themselves … their hive is a part of them. What if we embodied this idea? What if we got curious about the world and each other again instead of intimidated by it? This is why I turn walls into windows – to remember that we are all connected … that separation is an illusion.”

Interesting fact about this artist: he has hand-painted over 50,000 honeybees in various murals and installations worldwide. GESH. Talk about dedication to craft and attention to detail! Here’s a link so that you can read more about the work that he’s doing: The Good of the Hive.

Mural # 5   Flower Child (Peace Sign)

Location1537 Camden Road, Charlotte (on the left wall outside of Flower Child)

What a way to wrap up this blog post with a peace sign! This vibrant mural not only brightens up the space but also reminds us of our shared craving for peace and love. It’s the perfect closing note, leaving us with a warm, fuzzy feeling and a smile. Plus, it’s a final reminder to appreciate the colorful world around us before we say our goodbyes. I encourage you to explore the art in your own city or travels and let it inspire you. Thanks for joining me on this artistic adventure—until next time, keep exploring and stay curious!
