February Energy: Love, Legacy & a Birthday Trip

Welcome back, travel family!

This year didn’t ease in—it came in sprinting, not jogging. January flew by so fast it feels like it arrived and left without leaving a forwarding address. Honestly, I feel a little ghosted. LOL.

For many people, February brings Black History Month, Valentine’s Day flowers, and President’s Day. It also comes with the annual hope that Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t see his shadow—because basically everyone I know is pretty much over this winter thing. I know I am🥶.

And then there’s my favorite part: it’s my birthday month. Each year, I make it a priority to celebrate another trip around the sun by choosing a place that reminds me why reflection, peace, and intentional movement matter.

Where am I heading this year? I’ll keep you in suspense just a little longer before dropping a few hints. HA! But before the bags are packed and the hints start dropping, it’s worth remembering that meaningful travel isn’t measured by distance or dollars.

You don’t have to travel far or spend a lot of money to have an adventure. February is the perfect month to explore with intention, lean into culture, and celebrate love without breaking the bank. Here are a few budget-friendly ways to make the most of it:

1. Explore Black History Events Close to Home

February is filled with local Black History Month events that are often free or low-cost. Look for museum exhibits, cultural talks, walking tours, film screenings, or art showcases in your area. These experiences offer meaningful ways to learn, reflect, and support your community while honoring culture and legacy. These moments connect us to stories that deserve to be seen, heard, and carried forward beyond just this month.

When we engage with our history, we don’t just remember the past, we reclaim our voice, strengthen our understanding, and carry those lessons forward together. And yes, you might leave knowing a little more than you did before—consider it brain gains with no gym membership required. Thank me later. HAHA!!

2. Wander a Farmer’s Market, Local Market, or Craft Market

Even in winter, many cities host indoor farmer’s markets, local pop-ups, or craft markets. These spaces are perfect for slowing down, discovering handmade goods, and supporting local vendors. Consider it a low-cost way to explore, connect, and experience the heartbeat of a place.

Hands down, fresh-made bread and baked goods are my weakness—they pair perfectly with a hot cup of coffee on a cold day…well, any day really. LOL. Take your time wandering—savor the smells, the colors, and the moment. It’s a little February adventure that reminds you joy can be found in small, simple moments.

And whether it’s wandering a market or cozying up at a café, these simple outings show that adventure can happen anywhere.

So…if you happen to find a delicious baked good at the market, or a muffin the size of your two fists put together, please drop the info in the chat. Sharing is caring. (Dolly waving 👋🏾)

3. Try That Café You’ve Been Eyeing and Make It an Experience

Pick a café you’ve been meaning to try, grab a warm drink, bring a book, and give yourself permission to linger. Bonus points if it’s a local or Black-owned business. Who said adventure has to be loud or expensive? Sometimes it’s a quiet corner, a good read, and a moment of peace—your own little February escape.

Take the time to notice the details: the aroma of fresh coffee, the way the light hits the tables, the quiet rhythm of people around you, the swirl and swish of the espresso machine. Small, intentional moments like this remind us that exploration isn’t always about distance—it’s about presence, curiosity, and slowing down to enjoy life.

And let’s not forget the latte art that is next level. It’s pretty cool, right? So, take the pic and sip it anyway. HAHA! No judgement here.

So, without further ado … let me drop a couple of hints about my birthday trip. *Drum roll*

All I’ll say is this celebration is taking me to the birthplace of a legendary American singer, jazz pianist, and actor whose voice still hits every single time. And apparently, it’s also a place where wearing a fake mustache🥸to church is perfectly acceptable...unless it causes laughter.

Think you know where I’m headed? 👇🏾Drop your guess below—bonus points if your answer includes legendary jazz, blues, the Deep South, or a fake mustache in church. 😏

February reminds me that adventure—big or small, near or far—is always intentional. Whether exploring history, wandering a market, or cozying up at a café, joy is in slowing down and savoring the little things. See you next time for my birthday trip reveal.
