Tiny State, Huge Vibes: Why Rhode Island Stole My Heart

Welcome back, travel family! šŸ‚ā˜•Ā As we ease out of summer and into fall vibes, let me take you to the Ocean State—Rhode Island, where small size packs big adventures. It’s the tiniest state on the map, but trust me, the impact is huge. Fun fact: I even brought my mom along for the ride. I’m not sure what she thinks my trips with friends look like, but the world may never know—haha!

In my defense, I live in the south, so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect —but I was ready to embrace New England’s rich history and vibrant mix of cultures and people. So, let’s start at the very beginning—our arrival in Providence.

ree

As we deplaned and made our way through Providence Airport, one thing immediately caught my eye: a sailboat with towering sails located near the exit, proudly welcoming visitors with the words, ā€œWelcome to Rhode Island.ā€ After a long day of work and travel, we finally arrived at our hotel and got settled in for the night because the next day, we had plans to eat our way through Providence. Don’t judge me; mom is watching. LOL!

Chapter One: Providence Foodie Paradise

After a restful night, we decided to save our appetites for a noon tour with Rhode Island Red Food Tours, one of the best Providence food tours you can take if you want to explore the city like a local. The group was intimate, about 9–10 people, and after quick introductions, we were ready to dive in.

Our guide? A whole VIBE. Born and raised in Rhode Island, she is quick-witted, knowledgeable, entertaining, and full of historical facts—sprinkled with her own charm. Her passion for storytelling and local pride shined through in every detail (and in the way she dropped little colloquialisms that only true locals know).

Strolling through Downtown Providence, we ate our way through 6 unique restaurants and local gems šŸ“āœØ, soaking in the city’s architecture, public art, and local stories. Each spot served up its own unique flavors, with just enough walking in between to make every bite feel well-earned. šŸ˜‹

The tour lasted about 3 to 3.5 hours, and honestly, what better way to explore a city than by indulging all your senses through food? With full stomachs and wide smiles across our faces, Mom and I chatted about the people we met, the food we devoured, and of course—our guide.

And speaking of our guide, Michelle, she left us with this cheeky gem of Rhode Island wisdom: ā€œEveryone in Rhode Island has either dated, related, or been educated.ā€

Basically, they all went to the same schools.Ā I cannot with her. HAHA!

Chapter Two: Newport Mansions & Waterfront Charm

This was an early morning for us—we had to make sure we got to the ferry terminal on time. The Seastreak Ferry offers routes from several points around New England, including straight into Newport, RI. It’s such a great way to experience Narragansett Bay without the hassle of traffic. The ride itself felt like part of the adventure: serene views of lighthouses, sailboats, ships, and stunning homes along the shoreline made the journey almost as memorable as the destination.

Newport is packed with charm—think boutique shopping areas, everything from boats to mega yachts, and layers of centuries-old history. Fun fact: the International Tennis Hall of Fame is located here. Interesting, right? And in my humble opinion, if you’re visiting Newport, a mansion tour is a must. Two of the most iconic stops are The BreakersĀ and Marble House—both jaw-dropping in their own way.

As we stepped into the Marble House, it was immediately clear—nothingĀ in this place was ordinary. Every piece of furniture, every decorative pattern was elaborate and dripping with detail. I mean, even the staircase itself was made of marble! It’s a whole different level of wealth that’ll blow your mind.

And just when you think you’ve seen it all—tucked away on the grounds above the historic Cliff Walk is the Chinese Tea House. I was looking around like, ā€œAm I even supposed to be here?ā€ LOL! Okay Newport, we see you showing off. But the day wasn’t over yet—we had more to explore. Still, the ferry waits for nobody. Not me, not you, not even their mama. šŸ˜‰LMBO! Back to Providence we go!!

Chapter Three: A Reset and Rainy Day in Rhode Island šŸŒ§ļø

One thing I’ve learned in my travels? Always make the best of the moment and improvise if needed. On our last day, we had planned to take one more tour just in case we missed anything, but the rain basically said, ā€œSit your cute little travel-self down, ma’am.ā€ We ended up having a lazy morning, relaxing and chatting about lunch plans.

Before leaving Rhode Island, I had one more must-try: a true New England lobster roll. We decided to head to Providence Oyster Bar. (I hope you read that in my best New England accent, with a perfectly rolled ā€œrā€ at the end!) This restaurant didn’t miss a beat, and our waitress Joy was awesome. I ordered the Lobster Roll hot and buttered—and when I tell you, it tasted fresh, fresh. The sweet, tender meat, split toasted bun, and that buttery finish ... YIKES! I’m not saying I enjoyed it, but let’s just say the evidence was clear—like my completely empty šŸ‘€plate.

After our feast, the rain eased up just enough for us to stroll around Federal Hill before we headed back to the hotel —officially stamping this Rhode Island trip with a BIG, BOLDĀ seal of approval.

Final Takeaways ✨

Rhode Islanders are surprisingly nice … like, SUPER nice. And apparently, Rhode Island coffee milk is a whole thing! (Sadly, I didn’t get to try it this time šŸ˜©ā€”guess that means I’ll just have to plan a return trip!)

This tiny state packed big vibes—from Providence plates to Newport mansions. Traveling with my mom made it even more special, leaving me full of good food, new memories, and love for this little gem of New England.
