Tacos, Churros and Longhorns: My Birthday Travel Guide to Fort Worth’s Gems
Welcome to my blog! For me, last month was a whirlwind of travel, spanning from North Carolina to Mexico, racking up quite a few airline miles. HAHA. In between the hustle of packing and unpacking, I also had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday. Now, I’m not going to disclose my age, but I’m pretty sure that you’ll have fun guessing!! LOL. Feel free to drop your guesses in the comments below—I’m actually curious to see what number you all come up with!
In this post, I will give you a sort of behind-the-scenes look at my birthday celebration. While most of my time was spent in Fort Worth, I did have a chance to visit the African American museum of Dallas. From navigating the bustling Texas highways, where there’s always traffic, to working on my triceps by axe throwing, I’ll share with you the places I visited, the flavor-packed food spots I discovered, and, OF COURSE, my personal favorite, the colorful street art that immediately caught my eye along the way. Seriously though, those Michelle Obama arms are something I personally aspire to achieve. HEHE!!
I’ll also include links to some of these places so if you decide to visit Fort Worth (also known as Cowtown), you’ll have the resources you need to plan your own adventure. If you have a cool belt buckle or boots, this is your chance to flaunt them as we travel through the DFW area.
My morning started with a leisurely sleep-in before heading out to the Ol’ South Pancake House for breakfast. This no-frills establishment serves traditional Southern dishes 24 hours a day. Established in 1962, Ol’ South Pancake House has become a staple in Fort Worth area, renowned for its World-Famous German Pancakes – over 40 thousand served each year. Oh, my that’s a whole lot of pancakes and syrup. LMBO!!
I shared laughs, food, and jokes with the other two people that accompanied me. One of the ladies implored the host if I could be serenaded with a Happy Birthday song, and she complied. What happened next made this trip the most unforgettable. As the staff approached me to sing Happy Birthday, one of them asked if I preferred them to sing forward or back. In my mind, I wanted to say, “Hey, go ahead and sing it backwards,” which sounds pretty interesting. However, I simply said, “Whatever you all decide is fine for me.”
As they counted down, on three they turned around with their backs facing away from me singing Happy Birthday. I couldn’t do anything else but laugh and smile because it totally made my day. How could you get mad at something like this? HAHA!! Feeling the love and excitement by the cheerful atmosphere, we continued our adventure through Fort Worth, ready for more pleasant surprises.
With full stomachs, we drove through the city in search of murals that adorn the sides of building and alleyways. Instead of aimlessly driving around in hopes of finding amazing artwork, I was able to map out which street art lay in our path of interest based on this link: Fort Worth Murals. As we wandered through the streets, each vibrant piece we discovered seemed to tell its own unique story, adding an extra layer of charm to our Fort Worth adventure.
These amazing works of art are generously dispersed throughout the city, enhancing social media posts and selfies. After capturing these moments, we were ready to explore more of Fort Worth’s treasures. Our next stop? A brief intermission before we headed out for the evening. Please stay tuned for more updates. LMBO. Here are a couple of pictures for your viewing pleasure.
If you need to stretch, please go ahead and do so as we head to Fort Worth Axe Factory. I’ve heard so much about axe throwing, and since everything in Texas is BIGGER, this was my chance at greatness. HAHA. So, throwing is not as easy as you think. You can throw one handed or two handed, and it takes a bit of practice to get the coordination together. There was a couple in the lane next to us throwing stars and knives, and I was like, “Okay, I see you Mr. & Mrs. Smith,”*nodding my head in approval* LOL.
I was throwing like a girl with my noodle arms and limp wrists. However, after some time, I got the hang of it, and I left there grinning and posing for pictures. Hands down, it’s a great team building activity, low-impact exercise and stress reliever. As a bonus, after I left, my shoulders and triceps were hurting for the next two days, but hey, don’t you worry about me. LMBO. Throwing axes will work up an appetite, so after 2 hours of throwing and laughing, we headed for tacos.
I already had it in my mind that I wanted tacos and salsa verde dripping off my fingers, so the last stop of the evening led us to Velvet Taco. I was not disappointed by the menu options which cater to meat lovers and vegetarians alike. There are also numerous beer and margarita choices for those who may want to wash down beef brisket or BBQ pork with a cold one. I apologize in advance that I don’t have any taco pictures, but could you blame me? I mean, after throwing axes I had the hunger of a lumberjack wrapped in a small-framed lady. LOL. I wasn’t going to mention this; however, before I left Fort Worth, we came back here like 2 more times. OH MY!!
In retrospect, it’s safe to say that Velvet Taco became our go-to spot in Fort Worth. From the thrill of axe throwing to the delightful exploration of Fort Worth’s Street art scene, this birthday celebration was truly one for the books. With each adventure and every laughter-filled moment, I couldn't have asked for a better way to ring in another year of life. Until the next time, may your journeys be filled with laughter, good food, and unforgettable moments. Cheers to another year of adventures!
