Staying Healthy on the Go: How to Dodge Colds While Surviving Holiday Travel

Welcome back to my blog! Fall is in full swing, showing off with amazing displays of colorful foliage—and let’s not forget the weather that changes more often than a reality show plot twist. Can you believe we’re almost at the end of 2024? This year has flown by faster than a flight attendant zooming down the aisle right after you’ve finally fallen asleep. HAHA!

And, of course, the icing on this season’s cake is the arrival of cold and flu season. One minute, you’re stepping out in a cozy sweater; the next, you’re regretting your life choices in a T-shirt. YIKES! Yes, my friend it’s that unpredictable.

Holiday travel is exciting—until you find yourself face-to-face with sneezing strangers, recycled air, and that random crying kid. If you’re hoping to dodge the seasonal sniffles while heading off to your holiday celebrations, here are some tips to keep you healthy and happy during your travels. And hey, if you spot the flight attendant anywhere close, give me a nudge—I’m definitely in need of another pack of those Biscoff cookies. It’s serious business. LOL!

1. Boost Your Immune System Early (The Pre-Game Plan)

Start taking immune-boosting supplements like vitamin C, zinc, or elderberry a week to a few days before your trip. This will give your body a little extra defense before you face crowded airports, long flights, or chilly weather. Snack on fruits like oranges, and kiwis, or add leafy greens like spinach and kale to your meals—they’re packed with vitamins and antioxidants to help your body fight off those pesky travel bugs.

Vitamins like C and D play a critical role in strengthening your immune response, especially during the colder months. Taking them regularly can lower your chances of catching something while you're on the go. After all, a healthy body is a healthy mind—and we all want to stay sharp, focused, and ready for seconds of sweet potato pie. 😊

2. Stay Hydrated ( Drink More Agua)

Remembering to stay hydrated while traveling not only keeps you refreshed and energized but also helps prevent fatigue, headaches, and that dreaded dry skin that often comes with air travel. Start by carrying a reusable water bottle so you can sip throughout the day. If you’re refilling on the go, water purification tablets can be handy. Drink water before, during, and after flights to stay hydrated and keep your system running smoothly.

A word to the wise: water quality can vary widely across destinations, so stick to bottled water, avoid ice cubes, and use filters when needed. In some places, tap water might be a no-go, so plan ahead and invest in a travel-friendly reusable water bottle if you can.

Staying hydrated not only keeps you comfortable but also supports your immune system, giving you one less thing to worry about while you’re on the go. Trust me, nothing ruins travel like that bloated, dehydrated feeling—been there, regretted that. LMBO!

3. Keep Sanitizing Wipes Handy (Germs Be Gone)

Traveling during cold and flu season means touching surfaces that have seen more hands than an old school church offering basket. No joke!  To keep germs at bay, make sure you pack plenty of sanitizing wipes. Slip a travel-sized pack in your carry-on for easy access, and stash extras in your checked luggage for a quick resupply later. Plus, they’re great for a quick refresh on the go when handwashing isn’t an option.

Make it a habit to wipe down high-touch areas like seat armrests, tray tables, and even seat belt buckles as soon as you settle in. A quick swipe with disinfectant wipes can help you avoid picking up germs from all the hands that come before you. Don’t forget your phone and headphones (earbuds or Air pods), too—these personal items can be germ magnets when you're on the move.

And, of course, keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your bag for those moments when you can’t access wipes or a sink. Keep those wipes handy and use them often; it’s a simple habit that can make a big difference in keeping you happy and healthy on your trip!

4. Wear a Mask (Don’t Shoot the Messenger)

I know, I know—this one might get me disbarred from several travel groups, but hear me out! Most of us are a bit scarred from the mask mandates of 2020, but wearing a mask during cold and flu season can still be a smart move. It’s not just about preventing the spread of germs, but also protecting yourself from airborne viruses. Plus, let’s face it—masks are kind of like your personal barrier to a world of sneezing strangers and that weird guy on the plane who thinks “sharing” his cough is part of the in-flight experience.

For crowded flights or bustling airports, throwing on a mask could help you avoid catching that seasonal sniffle or worse. And for travelers with seasonal allergies, chronic conditions, or compromised immune systems, masks are an even bigger help in minimizing the risk of exposure to harmful viruses. It’s also a great way to keep your game face on while the flight attendant passes you by without offering another pack of Biscoff cookies. 😏

There you have it—some practical tips to help you navigate the holiday travel chaos without falling victim to the dreaded sniffles. Whether you’re boosting your immunity, staying hydrated, wiping down surfaces, or masking up, these small efforts can keep you feeling your best.  Safe travels, and may your holidays be filled with good health, good eats, lots of laughs, and maybe a nap or two on the plane. See you on the next adventure!

All great advice when traveling. My motto is “hydrate or die” when traveling. We usually find ourselves drinking more socially when visiting friends and family or on vacation. Be sure to hydrate with water at an equal or greater rate than alcohol. Keep up the great posts!
