“From Athens to Delphi: The Timeless Allure of Greece”

Welcome to my blog!! I hope that you are making exciting summer plans to explore, adventure and travel, whether it’s a local getaway or an international journey. In this post, I’m thrilled to share my recent exploration of the amazing country of Greece. What made this trip even more special was that my mom traveled with me.  Picture traveling with a parent who, at times, doesn’t filter what they say — not in an offensive way, but in a comical way. *Pondering with my hand under my chin.* Now that I think about it, I might have inherited my sense of humor from her.  HEHE.

As we journey through the bustling streets of Athens, the seaside town of Nafplio, and the ancient site of Delphi, you will discover the rich history and beauty of Greece through our eyes. So, grab a plate, slam it on the ground, and all together we will scream, “OPA!!” Now I think you’re ready to join me on this incredible journey through one of the world’s most captivating destinations. LMBO.

Oops ... one last thing before I forget. Here are a couple of travel nuggets for you to consider before heading to Greece:

  • Currency Exchange: Check out your local financial institution for buying foreign currency as it will save you time. I also found that I got a better rate at my local bank than exchanging money at the airport or incurring international ATM fees.

  • Jet Lag: Jet lag is real, and he isn’t your friend. SMH. My personal work around to this was sleeping for a couple of hours (3-4) once we got settled into our hotel and then opting to stay awake until our normal bedtime. This helped us shift our wake/sleep pattern while we were in Greece. Unfortunately, because of the seven-hour time difference between Greece and EST, my first day back to the States, I woke up at 4 a.m. completely awake, ready to clean the house, wash laundry and run errands like I had a family of four. HAHA!!

Now that we have gotten all the preliminaries out the way, let’s dive into our Greek adventure! Our first stop takes us to Athens.

Athens

Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, with a recorded history spanning over 3,400 years. The metropolitan area population of Athens is around 5 million, which is a comparable number to the population of New York City which is about 8.3 million. Yikes on bikes, that’s a large amount of people in one space. LOL.

Athens is an absolute must-see for anyone who loves exploring bustling metropolises. The vibrant heart of Greece is a city where ancient history meets modern energy, with iconic landmarks like the Acropolis standing proudly amidst active streets and lively markets. The metro (subway) is the quickest and most convenient way to get around Athens, linking the most popular attractions with various neighborhoods.

Wandering through its neighborhoods, you will find a captivating blend of classical architecture, contemporary art, and delightful Greek cuisine. Athens offers plenty of food option choices with prices ranging from budget-friendly to fine dining. Well, since we are talking about food, mom and I had the chance to eat at a quaint family-owned local restaurant named Pandora.

Don’t get too caught up on the name. HAHA!! This place serves up traditional Greek dishes made from scratch daily using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and produce. *Check out the picture below taken with the owner.*

Nafplio

After soaking in the history and energy of Athens, we set off to explore the charming seaside town of Nafplio, a place that perfectly complements the ancient allure of Greece with its picturesque scenery and relaxed atmosphere. Less than a two-hour drive from Athens on the Peloponnese peninsula, Nafplio boasts a beautiful old city filled with narrow alleyways, steep stairs, and charming streets. You'll find taverns serving delicious Greek food, bars, cafés, and a lovely seafront walkway.

Nafplio is also home to several historical landmarks, such as the Palamidi Fortress, offering breathtaking views of the town and the sea. This location offers a more serene and laid-back feel of Greece, away from the hustle and bustle of Athens, with incredible views of the sea. The picture below doesn’t do this place justice, but I tried. LOL!!

Olympia

Let's move from the peaceful town of Nafplio to Olympia, Greece, where the ancient Olympic Games started, and where history and culture run deep. The first Olympic Games we know of happened in 776 B.C. during the summer in a place called Olympia, found in southern Greece.  In comparison to modern Olympic games, men were the only ones who competed, and they did so naked. I’m not sure about you, but here in the South it can get pretty hot, humid, and sticky during the summer. Running and jumping in the buff, with no shoes or a grass skirt on, doesn’t smell or sound like a good idea to me. But to each their own. HAHA!!

Olympia is tucked away in the green forests of the Peloponnese peninsula and gives off a vibe of an ancient, majestic era. Here, visitors can wander through the impressive remains of old temples and sports buildings, catching a glimpse into a time when sports and physical skill were closely intertwined. Here I am stretching and getting ready to make my debut on the original Olympic site. Don’t judge me too harshly... OH MY. As I conclude my nostalgic journey through Olympia, my thoughts turn to another ancient marvel—Delphi.

Delphi

As we traveled by bus through Nafpatkos towards Delphi, the excitement grew. Despite learning about Greek mythology in school, seeing the ruins in person was a whole new experience. Delphi, located on Mount Parnassus, greeted us with its stunning views and beautiful landscapes. Sitting at an elevation of about 570 meters (1,870 feet), it offered breathtaking sights of the green Pleistos Valley and the Gulf of Corinth in the distance.

Surrounded by steep cliffs and lush vegetation, Delphi had a peaceful and mystical atmosphere. Its impressive scenery and historical importance made it a place where nature and history collided in a remarkable way. Experiencing the captivating beauty and scenery of Delphi firsthand was truly eye-opening.

As we come to the end of our journey from Athens to Delphi, I hope you've enjoyed following along on our adventures in Greece. Each stop has provided a unique glimpse into the rich history and beauty of this incredible country. Whether you're exploring ancient ruins, trying delicious Greek food, or simply taking in the stunning landscapes, may your journey be filled with unforgettable moments and discoveries. Until next time, safe travels!
